Through popular shows like CSI, awareness has increased regarding DNA and how it is used in crime prevention.

DNA technology is in use right now around the world to preserve and catalogue life’s biodiversity through a Canadian innovation; the DNA barcode of life. This colourful barcode is already being used by scientists to combat the greatest crime of our lifetime, the loss of biodiversity. By adding information to a few exhibits at the zoo, high school students and the public can witness the power of biotechnology in tackling a global issue.

Students at the Toronto Zoo in discovering how the DNA barcode of life works and its applications in species identification and conservation!
