Describe what you do at work.
My role is to figure out the best long term solution for a given problem with the least economic impact. This maybe the least expensive option or it may be the faster option if the change affects production. I use codes and standards, calculations, surveying, and drawing to develop the design. This includes using structural software and computerized drafting software.
Depending on the design I am working on I may engage in a brainstorming or collaborative workgroup. I sometimes have to use my technical background and understanding to explain things to non-engineering personnel. This is important because there are many different people, from different backgrounds working on a project. I keep clear documentation of my design and work so someone else can follow the reasoning.

How does your job affect people’s lives?
I think my job affects people’s lives in two main ways. It’s important that I’m helping keep the power plant producing electricity for the people in the province to use. However, the most important thing is to make sure the plant is well maintained and that any improvements are made to keep the public safe.
What motivates you in your career?
I’ve always enjoyed puzzles and problem solving. Every design solves a problem and finding the solution that works best for everyone (clients) is the best part of my job. My career has allowed me to work on many different types of projects. Also I’ve been able to work in several different parts of the country.

Describe your career path to this career.
My first step was to complete a Bachelor of Science in Engineering (BScE) degree. I followed this by completing an Engineer-in-Training program before becoming a Professional Engineer. I never thought that I would be working at a nuclear power plant when I started my career. My career has taken me from Halifax to Calgary and above the Arctic Circle. I have worked on a variety of projects ranging from from designing roads and bridges to sewage treatment facilities to my current job in the nuclear industry.
In order to determine what engineering I should take, I talked to several people in the industry, family and teachers. I was drawn to civil engineering because I always liked heavy construction, building design, bridges.
What activities do you like to do outside of work?
I enjoy golf, reading, woodworking, hiking and camping. I also volunteer with Kin Canada and Scouts Canada which allows me to give back to my community.
What advice or encouragement would you give others seeking a similar career?
I would encourage someone interested in engineering to attend career fairs or talk to people in the industry to see what jobs are available. There are many branches of engineering and each of specializes in specific technologies and products. Get to know the different types to see which one lines up with your personal interests. It is important to know what type of education or background that is required for the job that interests you and you think you would enjoy.
